Conventional medicine has long opposed "alternative" treatment techniques. With many of these, although they provide benefits to those using them, their mode of action was unexplained scientifically. Magneto therapy (treatment of illness with magnetic current) has been extensively researched and the physiology of its benefits documented.

Life developed under the influence of the earth's geomagnetic field. Although this field is relatively small, it plays a major role in many bodily functions. All tissues of the body and nervous system carry electromagnetic charges. These in turn react to magnetic fields. Cell regulation is governed by electromagnetic currents of the body. The body itself creates a magnetic field (termed bio-magnetism) which can be measured by sensitive magnetometers. In disease states these body electromagnetic potentials are altered and again are measurable. The effects of magnetics on the body is called magneto-biology, the subject of this article.

Magnets have been used for healing for thousands of years. The term magnet comes from Magnesia, a province in Asia Minor, where ancient Greeks discovered the rock, Magnetite, that attracted ferrous material. These people, and early Chinese, recorded its use in their medical literature. Medical use of magnets has been reported throughout the ages, as, in recent years, been the subject of world wide interest.

Dr. Nakagawa (Japanese Medical Journal #2745) in his paper, "Magnetic Field Deficiency Syndrome and Magnetic Treatment" outlines the problems of the lack of magnetism on the human. He believes the body is under the influence of the earth's magnetic field and is kept in balance in relationship to it.

Under modem living conditions this field is decreased by shielding of steel frame buildings, automobiles, etc. Also, the earth's magnetic field has deteriorated 50% in the last 1000 years adding to the deficiency of magnetic force on the body.

Lack of magnetism can cause abnormalities as stress, headaches, arthritis, muscle pain, the chronic fatigue syndrome, and even allergies. Space research by US and Russia has shown that the loss of calcium form the bone (osteoporosis) in astronauts is due to the lack of magnetic field action on the body in space.

Magneto-therapy has many other forms. Application of electromagnetic current to non-unioned fractures often results in healing that has resisted all standard treatment. European studies have shown benefits of permanent magnetic and low frequency pulsed magnetic therapy for asthma, hypertension, heart attacks, varicose ulcers, arthritis, and rheumatism. Newly developed units help control stress and prevent jet lag ("Stressmaster"), control insomnia and anxiety ("Neuron One"), and offer non-pharmaceutical pain relief ("Psychotron Delphi").

Life and the body have been looked upon as a mechanical model functioning with a chemical internal environment. Treatment has been undertaken with this same mechanical-chemical theory. It is now starting to be appreciated that health and disease, in many cases, depend on our body's electromagnetic balance.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THERAPY WITH PULSATING MAGNETIC FIELDS

Magnetic field therapy is probably the oldest therapy method of physical applications. In history the healing effects of magnetic fields can be traced back to the times before Christ.

Approximately 100 years ago the first patents were issued for magnetic field therapy devices. Those devices, however, were little qualified for general use, even though there were reports about very good medical effects.

The boom of chemotherapy has been one of the factors that caused a delay in the improvement of these therapy devices, which were relatively unhandy at the beginning and which were only used for a limited number of indications.

It was not until the 1960's that world-wide research started about the biological effects of magnetic fields. Important discoveries were made after space research into magnetic fields was stepped up.

Today we already have more than 4,000 scientific essays about the biological effects of magnetic fields. Even though the dominant part reports about the effects on plants and of DC-fields, in the past 30 years important scientific research papers have been published about biological effects of pulsating magnetic fields.

Today scientists from all over the world are doing research work on the therapeutic application of magnetic fields.

The Biological Institute of the University of Saarbrucken has called out intensive research into the substantiation of the effects of pulsating magnetic fields. Improved peripheral blood circulation as a result of magnetic field therapy along with a strong increase of partial oxygen pressure (p02) was found.

More than 100 clinics, hospitals and institutes are using pulsating magnetic field devices. Presently, more than 100,000 magnetic field treatments are made daily.

The results are well known. Physicians regard them as very satisfactory.

THE EARTH'S MAGNETIC FIELD AND ITS INFLUENCE

Ever since our planet was created, the entire life on earth has been influenced by electric and magnetic fields. Indeed, life would not, be possible without this influence. There are, however, few scientific findings on how these fields affect man and which disturbances of the intensities of these fields are weakened or eliminated by modern ecological factors.

Our planet is a magnet. Gilbert, the noted English scientist and physician, made this popular as early as 1600. The direction of the magnetic field of the earth is determined by compass; accordingly the directions `North' and `South' are marked on magnets. The earth's magnetism amounts to 47 ut; its intensity decreases from the poles towards the equator. The earth's magnetism varies - it pulsates in daily and yearly rhythms.

Terrestrial magnetic fields protect our planet from hazardous solar influences.

More recent scientific findings have proven that migrant birds and carrier pigeons as well as insects have a sensitive navigation system functioning with the help of the terrestrial magnetic fields The earth's magnetism is very weak compared to magnetic field used today in technology. In the case of electric motors, we use magnetic fields of I T or more, to transform electrical energy into mechanical power. In nuclear physics, field intensities of more than 2 T are produced by particle accelerators.

Although the biological effects of magnetic fields are flow well known especially among biophysicists, acceptance by medical practitioners in the past few years has been hesitant. The matter we are dealing with here is a border area in scientific research; physical factors causing biological processes. In the past, science has contributed little to explore this matter. There is presently sufficient literature on the effects of alternating magnetic fields on biological systems, especially on the human organism. During the last few years there has been growing interest in magneto-medicine and more and more papers on the subject are being published.

WHAT IS MAGNETISM?

The source of magnetic field is an interatomic or intermolecular current. It is generated for example by shifting charges, i.e. currents and quickly alternating electrical fields.

Magnetic field lines permeate all material. We distinguish the so called diamagnetic materials from the paramagnetic materials, Diamagnetic materials are characterized by the fact that the intensity of field lines, in their interior, will decrease as soon as they are exposed to a magnetic field, The relative permeability is then less than 1. The permeability of air is 1.

In contrast to this there are the so-called paramagnetic substances in which the intensity of field lines is increased upon exposure to a magnetic field. The permeability of such matter is higher than 1. Ferro- magnetic substances such as iron, cobalt and nickel also show such an effect, Their permeability is substantially higher than 1. The human body as a whole is neutral as far as magnetism is concerned. Electromagnetism is caused when current passes through a conductor or an air coil. A magnetic field builds up around the conductor. In the case of a coil, the density of magnetic field lines is determined by the magnetic fields that build up around the individual conductors. The magnetic filed lines, measured in Tesla, are composed of the number of field line per crn2 inside the coil. When the current flows in impulses, i.e. when it is switched on and off, we create a pulsating magnetic field.

WHAT ARE THE BIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF MAGNETISM?


The question whether alternating or pulsating magnetic fields have a biological effect, can be answered positively, in as much as the physical entity "magnetic field" is in a position to affect the organism in a bioenergetic way.

We know that with many diseases the surface potentials of the cells in the organism seem to vary when compared with the normal values.

The magnetic field completely permeates the body and thus every single cell.

The ions in the cells and the colloidal system are influenced, as we know, by magnetism and are moved in accordance with the magnetic pulsation that passes through them.

Furthermore, recent experiments proved that the partial pressure of oxygen in the tissue may increase up to 1,000% compared to the initial value under the influence of pulsating magnetic fields of a certain intensity and frequency.

Thus the pulsating magnetic field enables an effective therapy which can be used for a broad range of indications. The changes in the surface potentials of the cell, the colloidal state and the degree of ionization of the tissue, that occur in many diseases are markedly influenced by the entire body in rapid pulsation.

This causes a better blood circulation in the vessels and capillaries, increasing the partial pressure of oxygen in the tissue and resulting in an accelerated transportation of metabolic waste products - a basic requirement for every healing process.

Measurements by means of highly sensitive thermography devices showed a significantly improved circulation.

Magnetic fields permeate the whole organism. when intensity and frequency are controlled properly, energy is accumulated in all tissues of the body.

As a result of long-lasting changes in the condition of the colloidal tissues increases in cell activity and membrane potential will occur.In addition, intra-corporeal electric processes will intensity again and a regeneration of all functional parts and organs of the body can be clearly noted.

"Most pharmaceutical drugs and almost all prescribed drug treatments merely mask symptoms or control health problems, or in some way alter the way organs or systems such as the circulatory system work. Drugs almost never deal with the reasons why these problems exist while they frequently create new health problems as side effects."

Most people are aware that drugs cause side effects. But they are not aware that side effects are often diagnosed as new diseases. The lasting damage can be devastating. It can show its effects gradually and without notice

According to Bernard Jensen PhD, author of numerous books on health, it is the use of symptom-suppressing pharmaceutical drugs that is the cause of our North American disease epidemic. He describes the disease process as a progressive phenomenon, usually beginning in youth. when symptom-suppressing pharmaceutical are used for fever, headache, nausea, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, sneezing, ear infections and bodily discharges.

These acute conditions, which are signals of inflammation in an organ or tissue, signify the healthy body's efforts to cure the disease. If allowed to run its course without the suppressing of symptoms, the course of disease is halted. But suppressive drugs bring acute, overactive tissues to the sub-acute, under-active stage, drives catarrh and metabolic toxins back into the tissues. This is the stage of fatigue, hay fever and allergies, usually affecting our teenagers. Further symptom-suppression leads to chronic diseases such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, kidney disease, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, asthma and a host of other diseases that have reached epidemic proportions in our drug-inundated society. This stage usually begins at age 25 to 40, accounting for 80 percent of the diseases doctors treat.

Further suppression then leads to the degenerative stags of disease. The damage caused by pharmaceutical drugs and the disease process is more difficult to reverse if allowed to progress to the degenerative stage. One common drug-induced illness pattern might begin with an antibiotic treatment for an ear infection. The ear infection may disappear for a while but the patient develops eczema. The doctor would then prescribe hydrocortisone cream (a steroid cream) for the eczema which can cause breathing difficulties diagnosed as asthma. Now the doctor prescribes ventolin which may cause personality difficulties diagnosed as depression. The popular treatment for depression is Prozac which may cause homicidal and suicidal behaviour according to the authors of "What Doctors Don't Tell You."

These are all drug-induced illnesses, unrecognized by the patient and most medical doctors And this is only one of the numerous disease processes that may result from progressive drug treatment. But it is not your doctor's fault that he or she is totally unaware of the drug-induced illness epidemic. According to Dr Earl Mindell, pharmaceutical fraud, payoffs, cover-ups and secrecy contribute to the growing body of medical misinformation. And it is this information your doctor depends on when making decisions about your health.

If the recent Prozac scandal is an example of the lack of public health protection provided by government we have plenty to be worried about. What Doctors Don't Tell You (Vol. 6 No 11) reports a judge reprimanded Prozac manufacturer, Eli Lilly, for making a secret settlement with the families of victims murdered and injured by Joseph Wesbecker, who went on a shooting rampage while on the drug. During the trial the families cited Eli Lilly's history of criminal disclosure. In the Ora Flex case. Eli Lilly pleaded guilty to 25 criminal misdemeanor counts of failing to report adverse reaction to drug regulators. With respect to Prozac, the families argued that Eli Lilly had not accurately reported the test results of Prozac to the drug regulators. After fighting to get the Ora Flex evidence admitted, the plaintiffs decided not to introduce it after reaching the agreement with Eli Lilly.

The Prozac scandal is only one small example of a pharmaceutical cover-up. Where is our public health protection? Our own government is spending our tax dollars to protect the pharmaceutical manufacturers and prevent us from learning the truth.

We have a drug-induced health crisis caused by our pharmaceutical health care system that has no accountability. The disease epidemic will continue to escalate until the people of Canada take back control of their health. Let's join the grass roots fight for freedom at choice in health care.
